Come April, there could be some changes at the U.S. Social Security Administration and the way people access their benefits.
With nearly 50 locations on the federal closure list, senior advocates, like Age Well Vermont, say it’s creating some anxiety.
According to the latest information directly from the Social Security office, individuals who cannot use the online service to apply for benefits have until April 14 to apply over the phone. After that, you’ll either need to apply online or in person.
Some are concerned about the barriers they could face if their closest office has to close.
Groups like Age Well Vermont say even a few closures could present big challenges for rural communities, but it’s best not to panic until you have all the information. Officials say you should reach out to a trusted source, like Age Well, or your local Social Security office for guidance.
“Clients have asked questions about the Social Security building closing, not just here in Burlington, but also in Montpelier and Rutland,” said Sam Carleton, director of resource navigation at Age Well Vermont, “There’s a lot of talk amongst folks… a lot of things people are reading on the internet from not reliable sources.”
