Buried in Treasures: Workshop Beginning in May

Starting this May, Age Well will be holding a 16-week workshop with a supportive peer environment for those with extreme housekeeping issues. We spoke with Millie Richard, Caregiver Support Specialist, to learn more about the classes.

What is hoarding?

Individuals who suffer from hoarding or clutter have a pattern of excessive acquiring and saving of possessions which causes them distress or makes it difficult to live in their home safely and comfortably.

What is the format?

The workshop is based on the book, “Buried in Treasures: Help for Compulsive Acquiring, Saving, and Hoarding” by David F. Tolin, Gail Steketee, and Randy O. Frost. The workshop is a peer-led intervention for those with issues related to acquiring items, clutter, or hoarding. Each session focuses on a different chapter from the “Buried in Treasures” book. Activities include discussion of each chapter, exercises from the book dealing with acquisition, discarding, and disorganization, and homework between sessions.

I will be facilitating the workshop along with colleagues in the community and past workshop participants. We are aiming to have a small committed group of fifteen participants.

What do you hope participants gain?

Through this workshop series, we make sure individuals have a resource to use whether or not they are in crisis. This supports long-term skill building, and helps them feel confident in their ability to make a change. A really powerful part of this program are the relationships participants build with each other during the workshops which help them during the program and more importantly long after the workshop ends.

In my role as a peer advocate, I have experience with clutter interfering with my day to day life. Having gone through this workshop as a participant, I have made great progress in my own living situation and have seen the results in our after-group of workshop graduates who still meet share successes.

Why is Age Well holding this workshop?

Hoarding affects roughly 2.3-6% of the population. However, there are relatively few services available in Vermont. This is the second time Age Well has held a Buried in Treasures workshop series. This evidence-based workshop series has been shown to result in symptom relief for those affected.
