Honoring the Power, Resilience, and Contributions of Older Adults
Every May, we come together for Older Americans Month (OAM) – a time to recognize the vital roles older adults play in shaping our families, communities, and future. Since 1963, this national observance has celebrated the achievements, contributions, and stories of aging Americans.
What is This Year’s Theme of Older Americans Month?
The Older Americans Month 2025 theme, “Flip the Script on Aging,” challenges stereotypes and promotes a more inclusive, empowering vision of growing older. It’s about reframing the narrative –encouraging people of all ages to challenge outdated assumptions, embrace a more realistic view of aging, and recognize the strength and vitality older adults bring to the table. As our population ages, it’s more important than ever to advocate for the well-being, dignity, and engagement of older adults – not just in May, but every day of the year.
How You Can Celebrate Older Americans Month
There are countless ways to engage with and uplift older adults during the month and all year long. Here are a few suggestions:

Connecting with Younger Generations
- Intergenerational Activities: Organize opportunities for older adults to engage with youth through workshops, classroom visits, storytelling, or creative projects.
- Storytelling: Create spaces where older adults can share stories and memories – either in person or via video chat – to build mutual understanding and respect across generations.
Promoting Social Engagement
- Social Activities: Host group activities, game nights, or day trips that bring older adults together to foster friendship and fun.
- Community Events: Promote local events that encourage connection and interaction among older adults.
Celebrating and Recognizing Contributions
- Advocacy: Use this month to raise awareness about issues affecting older adults and encourage action.
- Recognizing Accomplishments: Hold events to honor older adults for their achievements and contributions.
Fostering a Positive Image of Aging
- Challenging Stereotypes: Embrace the theme “Flip the Script on Aging” by encouraging a more positive and realistic view of aging.
- Promoting Active Aging: Support programs that help older adults stay engaged – physically, mentally, and socially.
Celebrating Older Americans Month isn’t just about May – it’s about cultivating respect, inclusion, and connection all year long.
